Among the learning objectives of the STEM WEEK were: sparking interest in the area of virology in particular, stimulating critical thinking skills, and acquiring basic content all the while gaining a broader perspective of STEM.
In addition to connecting the dots between the classroom and the real world, a major focus of the STEM week was helping students relate different areas of STEM they heard about to STEM jobs, careers and career paths. A panel formed by a UC Davis student in biotechnology and computer science, an IT professional, and a doctor in the Kaiser Permanente Family Practice Residency Program shared their experience and answered compelling questions from students. Another highlight of the STEM WEEK was a Health Education & Career Resource Fair featuring BIORAD, STEM providers and other local community partners, that transformed the lobby of the Solano Community College Vallejo Center, where the summer program was hosted, into a curiosity filled exploration hub.
