Vallejo Upward Bound visits Solano Community College for STEM Week
During PACT STEM Week, Upward Bound Vallejo students visited the Solano Community College Vallejo campus to attend a Health Education & Career Fair on June 25, 2025. The event featured BIORAD, STEM providers and other local community partners, that transformed the lobby of the college, where the summer program was hosted, into a curiosity filled exploration hub. A major focus of the STEM week was helping students relate different areas of STEM they heard about to STEM jobs, careers and career paths. A panel formed by a UC Davis student in biotechnology and computer science, an IT professional, and a doctor in the Kaiser Permanente Family Practice Residency Program shared their experience and answered compelling questions from students. Representatives from Solano also presented resources available for attending the college.
Among the learning objectives of the STEM WEEK were: sparking interest in the area of virology in particular, stimulating critical thinking skills, and acquiring basic content all the while gaining a broader perspective of STEM. This week-long exploration culminated in a visit to biotech company, Amyris, where they witnessed firsthand what the job of a scientist in this field might entail.
