Our Story & Our Call to Action

Since 1965 Plan of Action for Challenging Times (PACT), Inc has supported socioeconomically disadvantaged Bay Area communities to navigate the overwhelming process of college preparation and application, as well as providing tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment activities, under two federally funded programs, namely Talent Search and Upward Bound.

PACT currently serves approximately 500 students annually and, so far, has provided yearly scholarships with the help of community partners, private foundations, and the PACT Board. It is a truly humbling experience to help students in what is often a very frightening transition from high school. As low income and/or first in their families to attain college, many PACT students face significant challenges at home and in their communities, making the road to academic achievement much more complex than their peers.

These scholarships make an incredible difference in a student’s life. We need more partners to help the cause.

PLEASE JOIN US IN THIS CALL TO ACTION by clicking here to provide additional support to our future college graduates.

Any support level is appreciated: donations of $100, $500, $1,000, $2500, $25,000 or more, all will be contributed to PACT’s Scholarship Fund. Sponsors at the level of $5,000 and above will be recognized with their logos featured on our website. Currently under re-construction, our upcoming revamped website will offer a Supporter’s page acknowledging all donations. A donation of $50,000 will recognize your organization’s name by naming the scholarship fund.

Loreal’s Story

Class of 2025

Meet Loreal, a well-rounded, eager, and resilient PACT high school senior. She is in the process of navigating the process to complete high school and attend college. She has already been accepted to CSU East Bay, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Fresno State. She is eager and excited, and regularly reaches out to her PACT College Advisor as she anticipates what to do next to pursue her dreams to become a nurse!

Loreal has not had an easy time getting to this point–she is new to this environment, her third school since 9th-grade. Her family tries their best to offer what support they can, but life before now has been difficult, turbulent, and unstable.

Before now, an air mattress served as Loreal’s bed in the living room that she shared with 10 people. The house was filled with love, but chaos, crying children, and domestic turbulence is what she remembers the most.

Eventually, Loreal was placed into foster care, and from there, was raised by her grandmother. Life with her grandmother was a little better, but unfortunately, she became sick, and Loreal’s role as the caregiver took precedence over being the child.

This year has offered new hope. Loreal has finally been able to move from her previous residence and feels at “home” at her new high school. In a few short weeks, Loreal has taken the journey from considering college as an out-of-reach option, to applying, and being accepted to a university!

Loreal’s story is not unique to our organization, PACT, Inc, a community-based organization whose mission is to provide free assistance to low-income students to get to college. We are writing to request your support in providing scholarships for our 2025 cohort.
