College Advising Program |
The college advising component of PACT’S Educational
Talent Search Programs constitute a large core of the
organization. Each year, the staff of these programs advise and
tutor approximately 3,000 students.
-
Most college
ready students in the programs have an average of three individual
college advising sessions that address college admissions,
financial aid, career information, assistance with completing
application forms, among many other issues related to their
educational plans.
Approximately
1800 students participated in our workshops on admission to the
different segments of higher education, as well as public and
private financial aids programs, career information and
exploration and other related areas. Community outreach
workshops were also conducted at community agencies and
institutions, such as the Youth Guidance Center, libraries, and
youth employment programs.
The college
campus program include trips by charter bus to Bay Area campuses
such as: the University of California at Santa Cruz, St. Mary’s
College, Sonoma State University, San Francisco State and UC
Berkeley.
PACT awarded scholarships to
low-income students from private donations.

Tutorial Program |
This program provided tutorial services to a total of 489 middle
and high school students during the 2008-2009 school year at
Balboa High School, James Lick Middle School and Willie L. Brown
College Preparatory Academy.
In addition, the staff conducted
workshops on college information and planning, career
information, classroom behavior management, and study skills.
Knowing that
students will aspire to a higher education when given early
exposure, the middle school program conducted college campus
visits to San Jose State University, San Francisco State
University, and UC Berkeley.
For many
children who have never left their neighborhood areas, the
Tutorial Program conducted field trips to
the San Jose Museum of Technology
and sports events such as a San Francisco Giants baseball game.

East Bay Office |
-
PACT’S East Bay office
is located in Vallejo, California in response to
a staggering need for services in that area in 2002. A $200,000 grant
enabled us to expand our program services to the cities of
Richmond and Vallejo, California. A staff of four persons - 2
Educational Advisors, an Office Manager and an Assistant Tutorial
Coordinator provided
program services to a minimum of 600 low income and first
generation young people each year. The participating schools are Jesse
Bethel, Vallejo, and Richmond High Schools. As well as Solano
Middle School.
-
During the
first year, a total of 652 students benefited from PACT
services. Of that number, 246
students were accepted to two and four year colleges. Many
ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students attended our college
career and financial aid workshops. A tutorial program is
operating for middle school students, as well.
-
PACT East Bay
is located within the facility of the Continentals of the Omega
Boys and Girls Club of Vallejo.
